A new month means a new challenge over on the Studio Tekturek blog. And what an inspirational picture that is, right. The colors got me in a tropical mood, summer has been on my mind.
I scrapped a couple of pictures from a trip to the beach last summer. It was the perfect summer day. Patterned papers are all from Studio Tekturek’s Peachy Christmas collection, or how a Holiday collection can totally get that summer vibe;)
Not so long ago I bought the ephemera pack of the Hello Sunshine collection by Pink Paislee, a bunch of beautiful cardstock die-cuts and transparancies. There were a few awesome die-cuts in that pack, totally fitting today’s layout. I placed the title directly onto my pictures. The ampersand is from a Freckled Fawn embellishment kit.
I tried to stick as close to the colors of the inspiration photo when choosing my embellishments. I ended up using a mix of different manufacturers, I love mixing and matching it all myself. As much as I like my coordinated kits, like the ones from Studio Calico and Freckled Fawn, I still enjoy it a lot when I can go through my stash and find a bunch of bits and pieces that work together. It’s a very satisfying feeling, for some reason (please tell me I’m not the only one;)) I used my Gelatos to add the colors of the inspiration photo to my background.
I showed you in a video two weeks ago how I usually make my watercolor backgrounds for my layout, but I used a somewhat different technique for making this one. Since I wanted to keep the star pattern on the background, I couldn’t turn to gesso for protecting my paper. I tried a couple of possibilities on a small piece of the patterned paper before starting for real, and I learned that my paper was soaking up the water pretty quickly and didn’t allow me to work my color around without damaging the paper. So I knew I was going to need to be quick to add that soft colorwash and get my background dry again before my paper turned into pulp.
I pulled out a water color palette and mixed my colors in there instead of directly onto the paper. I colored inside each of the bowls with my gelato, leaving a good amount of the pigment before adding water. I made sure to blend the water and gelato really well so that all the lumps were gone, And then I applied the colors one by one to my page with a watercolor brush.
I immediately dried the wash with my heat tool after applying, to keep the impact on my paper as minimal as possible. There wasn’t much opportunity for the colors to blend into each other since it all had to go really quick, but this gives a different, equally fun look to my background. I love the softness of it all. In the end I splattered some of the leftover color onto my paper.
The June Challenge over on the Studio Tekturek blog will be open until June, 25th. Create something inspired by the beatiful color combo of the picture on top of this post, and add your link to the Inlinkz tool at the bottom of the challenge post over on the Studio Tekturek blog. I hope you can join us!
